SRINAGAR, April 6 – Minister for Forest, Ecology & Environment, Javed Ahmed Rana, today underscored the urgent need to upscale conservation efforts across Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the impact of climate change and the growing importance of sustainable forest management.

Chairing a review meeting of the Forest Department, Rana stressed the need for a coordinated and inclusive strategy to protect the region’s rich biodiversity and forest resources. He called on all stakeholders to work together to enhance conservation measures, particularly in light of shifting climate patterns.

“We must adopt a unified approach for efficient forest management and wildlife conservation. The time to act is now,” Rana said, adding that local community involvement through community forestry initiatives has proven effective in promoting sustainability and reducing deforestation.

He also pointed to eco-tourism as a valuable tool for promoting conservation while creating economic opportunities. “Responsible eco-tourism can help reduce negative environmental impacts and simultaneously support local livelihoods,” he said.

The Minister emphasized several priority areas during the meeting, including:

  • Strengthening forest fire preparedness and control systems in vulnerable zones,

  • Curbing encroachment, poaching, and habitat degradation, and

  • Promoting sustainable timber extraction through timely marking and supply processes.

Highlighting the significance of environmental stewardship, Rana urged for increased monitoring, community engagement, and the implementation of policies that foster ecological balance and economic development.
