
CM Omar wants resumption of work on Tulbul Navigation Barrage

Wular Lake, North Kashmir — The long-stalled Tulbul Navigation Barrage, seen in the civil structures around Wular Lake, has returned to public discourse following the recent “temporary suspension” of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). Originally initiated in the early 1980s, the project was halted under diplomatic pressure from Pakistan, which claimed it violated the treaty. With the IWT now under review, questions arise about resuming the barrage. If completed, the Tulbul project could enable navigation on the Jhelum River and boost winter-time power generation for downstream hydroelectric projects — a significant strategic and developmental gain for Jammu and Kashmir.
