SRINAGAR, MAY 15 (RNA):
In a significant step toward reviving the tourism industry in Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a high-level meeting with top officials and key tourism stakeholders to deliberate on challenges faced by the sector and brainstorm on a sustainable revival roadmap in the wake of recent setbacks impacting travel to the region.
The meeting was attended by Advisor to CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Additional Chief Secretary to CM Dheeraj Gupta, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, IGP Kashmir VK Birdi, Commissioner Secretary Tourism Yasha Mudgal, and Director Tourism Kashmir Raja Yaqoob, along with major players from the tourism industry.
Prominent industry voices, including Mushtaq Ahmad Chaya, Chairman of the J&K Hoteliers Club, participated and represented different sectors like hoteliers, transporters, and artisans.
While addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a thoughtful, long-term revival blueprint for Kashmir’s tourism economy.
“I recommend that we design a comprehensive and impactful plan in a considered manner and not rush through it,” he said.
He suggested that the Tourism Department collaborate with stakeholders to finalize a strong revival strategy after the conclusion of the Shri Amarnath ji Yatra 2025.
The Chief Minister proposed that the revival package should encompass support for hotels, houseboats, shikaras, taxis, and handicrafts, and also suggested innovative attractions like Dubai-style shopping festivals.
He proposed reviving cultural programs, laser fountain shows, and unique tourist experiences to elevate Kashmir’s allure as a travel destination.
Recognizing the hardships faced by the sector, Omar Abdullah said, “I fully acknowledge the difficulties you are enduring—whether it’s running businesses, retaining staff, or covering ongoing expenses. Many are under financial strain due to loans.”
He showed special concern for small-scale entrepreneurs who have invested in tourist taxis, minibuses, or homestays using bank loans.
“To support them, I will consult with the Tourism Department and related institutions to pursue a dedicated relief package from the Government of India,” he affirmed.
He added that relief efforts should also cover border residents whose properties and businesses have been damaged due to unrest. For tourism operators, loan moratoriums for at least two quarters will be explored to offer temporary financial ease.
Despite current challenges, the Chief Minister noted continued interest in Kashmir tourism and said FAM (Familiarization) tours and promotional campaigns are in the pipeline.
“I’ve been receiving positive outreach from organizations keen to promote travel to Jammu and Kashmir. I myself will actively participate in promotional efforts as the situation stabilizes,” he added.
He assured attendees that the issues of financial assistance and interest waivers would be discussed at the highest level, including with the Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and senior Central Government officials.
He concluded by saying, “We will pursue this agenda in a structured and result-oriented manner.”
Earlier, the tourism stakeholders presented a set of practical suggestions including the launch of FAM tours, corporate LTC travel campaigns, government conference hosting in Kashmir, and airfare subsidies to make the region more accessible.
They stressed that with the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra approaching, this is the perfect opportunity to send a positive signal to the country that Kashmir is safe, peaceful, and ready to welcome tourists with open arms.
