Prof. Nilofer Khan Re-appointed as Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir for Another Two Years
Srinagar, May 16, 2025: In a significant decision for higher education in Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who also serves as the Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, has re-appointed Professor Nilofer Khan as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir for a second term of two years. The re-appointment is effective from May 19, 2025, coinciding with the completion of her existing three-year tenure.
The order, issued from the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat, highlights the powers vested in the Chancellor under Section 12(5) of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969.
Prof. Nilofer Khan made history in May 2022 by becoming the first woman Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir. With over 30 years of teaching experience, she has held various key academic and administrative positions at the university, including Dean College Development Council, Registrar, Dean Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, and Director Institute of Home Sciences. She also holds the distinction of being the first woman Dean Students Welfare and the Founder Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Research at the university.
Her re-appointment comes at a crucial time as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team is scheduled to visit Kashmir University for inspection and to review the university’s grading. Currently, the university holds an A+ grade from NAAC, which was valid up to May 2024.
This decision ensures continuity in the leadership of one of the region’s premier educational institutions. Earlier, the Chancellor had also re-appointed Prof. Umesh Rai as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu and extended the term of Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganaie as the Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Kashmir.
The academic community of Kashmir University has reportedly welcomed the re-appointment.
