SRINAGAR, MAY 17:
Peoples Conference President and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone has urged the Government of India to establish a holistic border reconstruction program in partnership with corporate entities, highlighting the urgent need to compensate and rehabilitate victims of cross-border shelling in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking after his visit to shelling-affected border villages, Lone expressed grave concern over the psychological trauma and material devastation faced by civilians. “These have been terrible days with families fleeing relentless shelling. The young children are scared as their playfulness is snatched away from them,” Lone remarked.

He stressed that border residents are bearing the brunt of a national conflict, not personal vendettas, and therefore should not be left to bear the costs of war alone.

“It takes a lifetime for a poor man to build a house. That house is gone in shelling. Who will build it now? Will it take the poor family another lifetime?” he questioned.

Lone called for full and immediate compensation to affected families and criticized existing government compensation mechanisms as inadequate and mired in red tape. He proposed the creation of a temporary institutional framework to pool funds through government channels and corporate CSR initiatives, stressing that “damage runs into crores and crores.”

“If the government has the resources, they must pay. If not, they must raise the funds,” Lone asserted.

In a sharp message to national media, Lone challenged TV anchors and commentators, referring to them as “newsroom war mongers”, to contribute financially to the victims.

“We should identify the most vocal war mongers in the news room and request them for a month’s salary,” he said, underlining the disconnect between media rhetoric and ground realities.
