MLA Gulmarg Farooq Ahmad Shah Reviews Sericulture Development, Attends Farmer Awareness Program, and Visits Windstorm-Hit Areas

TANGMARG, MAY 19, 2025:
In a significant move to boost the sericulture sector and respond to public concerns, Hon’ble MLA Gulmarg Farooq Ahmad Shah today chaired a comprehensive review meeting with officials from the Sericulture Department and other allied sectors. The meeting, held in Tangmarg, focused on evaluating the current status of sericulture projects and planning strategic initiatives for future development.

Reviving Sericulture Across Gulmarg Constituency

During the meeting, officials informed the MLA that six mulberry nurseries spanning 450 kanals of land are operational in the Gulmarg constituency. These nurseries are being developed for enhanced silkworm production under government-supported schemes.

The review meeting was attended by the Additional Director Sericulture, Deputy Director Sericulture, Executive Engineer Irrigation, and other department officials.

Awareness Program for Kiramkash (Farmers)

Post-meeting, MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah participated in a Sericulture Awareness Program attended by hundreds of local farmers (Kiramkash). Officials educated the attendees about various government initiatives and schemesdesigned to uplift the sericulture sector and boost farmer participation.

Modern Infrastructure & Outreach Initiatives

While addressing the gathering, MLA Shah emphasized the revival of silkworm production and stressed the need for grassroots-level outreach. He directed:

  • Departmental awareness camps to be held in every village.

  • The Irrigation Department to set up a dedicated water supply line for the Dhobiwan Sericulture Nursery.

MLA Shah also announced the installation of floodlights and a dedicated water system at the Dhobiwan Nursery to ensure round-the-clock operations. He added that the nursery will be developed into a sericulture tourism hub, positioning it as a unique attraction in the region.

“Modernizing sericulture in the Gulmarg constituency will not only revive this traditional industry but also boost local employment and economic growth,” Shah said.

Visit to Windstorm-Affected Villages

Later in the day, MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah visited the villages of Baderkoot and Chandilora, which were impacted by a windstorm on May 18. He assessed the on-ground situation and instructed the administration to:

  • Ensure timely compensation to the affected residents.

  • Implement effective rehabilitation and restoration measures immediately.
