
DC Baramulla Reviews Eco-Sensitive Zone Implementation, Calls for Timely Data Submission for Zonal Master Plan.
Baramulla, June 14: In a significant step toward environmental conservation and sustainable development, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, today chaired a comprehensive meeting to assess the implementation of Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) guidelines around protected wildlife areas in the district. The meeting focused on enhancing inter-departmental coordination and expediting the formulation of the Zonal Master Plan (ZMP) in accordance with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) directives.
Key officials from the Forest Department, Wildlife Protection Department, Pollution Control Board, Rural Development, and other line departments participated in the review. A detailed presentation was given, classifying activities within the ESZ into permitted, regulated, and prohibited categories under national environmental policy.
During the session, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of striking a balance between biodiversity conservation and environmentally responsible development. He directed all departments to cooperate fully and comply with the ESZ norms. In particular, he called for the immediate issuance of a circular mandating the submission of comprehensive data related to land use patterns, infrastructure, resource extraction, and current development within the designated ESZ zones.
The structure and responsibilities of the ESZ Monitoring Committee were also reviewed. The committee, comprising officials, environmental experts, and representatives from NGOs, is tasked with overseeing implementation, reviewing development proposals, and ensuring environmental compliance.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that the preparation of the Zonal Master Plan must be treated as a high-priority task. He urged all departments to work proactively, submit accurate data promptly, and maintain strict adherence to environmental regulations to safeguard Baramulla’s ecological heritage while supporting sustainable district development.
