Aaya Workers Demand Justice, Dignity, Job Security
SRINAGAR, MAY 17:
The Jammu & Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), led by Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani, has raised serious concern over the uncertain future of Aaya workers appointed in government-run schools across the Union Territory. These women, many of whom are orphans, widows, divorcees, and economically distressed, were engaged to provide motherly care to pre-primary students, while also being offered a basic source of income.
Until last year, their contracts were renewed annually in April, but in a troubling shift, no renewals have been issued this year, leaving them in a state of financial despair and emotional distress.
Wani criticized reports of arbitrary disengagements by some Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs), allegedly without any formal orders from higher authorities. “Instead of supporting these vulnerable women, some officials are adding to their trauma,” he said.
“A delegation of Aayas, led by President Mehmooda Ji, met me in tears. Their appeal is humble and genuine, yet they are being ignored. These women represent the most distressed segments of our society,” Wani added.
The JKCSF has made a three-point appeal to the government:
-
Immediate renewal of Aaya services.
-
Prevention of unauthorized disengagements.
-
Accountability for officers causing undue delays.
Wani warned that if the government fails to act, these workers may be forced to launch peaceful protests. “The administration must act before their silent tears turn into a loud cry for justice,” he cautioned.
