Cath Lab Inaugurated at GMC Anantnag Amid Concerns Over Staff Shortage and Infrastructure Gaps
Published on February 20, 2025
Anantnag, Feb 20: The Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, inaugurated a new catheterization (cath) lab at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, marking a significant development in the region’s healthcare services. However, the inauguration comes at a time when the hospital continues to grapple with staff shortages and inadequate infrastructure, raising concerns about the quality of patient care.
The newly inaugurated diagnostic and main casualty block, sanctioned 17 years ago in 2007 when the facility was still a district hospital, is finally operational. The construction of three new blocks for the erstwhile Mirza Afzal Beg Memorial Hospital (MAMB) was approved in 2007, with the Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC) setting a three-year deadline for completion. However, delays due to funding shortages and slow execution prolonged the project, even after the hospital was upgraded to a medical college in 2019.
Despite these developments, GMC Anantnag continues to face challenges, including a shortage of doctors and staff. Reports indicate that the hospital is operating with a 30% shortage in medical personnel, impacting the efficient functioning of critical facilities like the newly inaugurated cath lab. The increasing patient rush further exacerbates the situation, highlighting the urgent need for better management and infrastructure improvements to ensure quality healthcare services.
Health experts and local residents have urged the government to address these issues on a priority basis, ensuring that the hospital is adequately staffed and equipped to meet the growing medical demands of the region.
