CBI chief Praveen Sood gets one-year extension.
New Delhi, 7th May 2025 – Shri Praveen Sood, the current Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), receives a one-year extension to his tenure. This development comes after a high-level meeting convened on Monday, May 5th, 2025, to select his successor ended without a consensus.
The selection committee, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, deliberated on potential candidates. However, according to sources, no agreement could be reached, leading to the likelihood of an extension for the incumbent director.
Shri Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, assumed the role of CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for a fixed tenure of two years, which is scheduled to end later this month. Prior to this, he served as the Director General of Police for Karnataka.
While some reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi submitted a dissent note regarding the extension, the final decision is expected to be announced through an official gazette notification soon.
The CBI is India’s premier investigating agency, responsible for tackling high-profile crimes, corruption, and national security matters.
