Published on April 8, 2025
New Delhi | April 7, 2025:
Director Horticulture Planning & Marketing, Mr. Ghulam Jeelani Zargar, undertook a comprehensive visit to Azadpur Mandi, Delhi, one of Asia’s largest fruit and vegetable markets. The visit aimed to strengthen market linkages, promote transparency, and encourage digital trading practices for horticultural products from Jammu and Kashmir.
During his interaction with buyers, commission agents, and other stakeholders, Mr. Zargar addressed multiple issues including:
-
Transportation challenges
-
Transparent trade practices
-
Promotion of e-trading via the e-NAM (National Agriculture Market) portal
He emphasized the importance of digital trading platforms in increasing transparency, ensuring better returns for growers, and bridging the gap between growers in J&K and buyers across India.
Meeting with KAMA (Kashmir Apple Merchants Association):
A detailed meeting was later held with representatives of KAMA, where the Director encouraged frequent buyer-seller meets to create sustainable market linkages. He noted that building trust and networks between outside buyers and local growers was essential to boost the horticulture sector in Jammu & Kashmir.
“Kashmir’s produce has huge potential — from apples to walnuts. We need to build systems that allow our farmers to access larger markets seamlessly,” Mr. Zargar said.
Visit to Shalimar Bagh Office:
Mr. Zargar also visited the office of the Deputy Director Horticulture (Planning & Marketing) at Shalimar Bagh, Delhi. He reviewed the ongoing developmental works at Kishan Ghar, especially the extension block, and took stock of the current operations and outreach.
Conclusion:
The visit reflects the J&K government’s commitment to improving horticulture infrastructure, enabling modern trade practices, and ensuring that farmers and growers get fair access to national markets. The integration of platforms like e-NAM and frequent interaction with stakeholders is seen as a major leap toward a transparent and efficient trade ecosystem for Kashmiri produce.
