Salamabad | May 11, 2025:
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti made an emotional appeal for peace during her visit to Salamabad near the Line of Control (LoC), where she met families displaced by ongoing cross-border shelling.

Accompanied by senior PDP leaders including Basharat Bukhari, Waheed Para, Rafiq Rather, and DDC member Razia, Mufti also visited GMC Baramulla and nearby relief camps, interacting with injured civilians and distressed residents forced to flee their homes.

“These children are not waiting for revenge, they are waiting for peace. End the war. Let them live,” said Mufti, calling for an immediate end to hostilities. She described the heartbreaking scenes of civilians huddled in shelters and hospitals, and homes turned to rubble. “This is why Kashmir cries out for peace, not war,” she added.

Speaking to media at Salamabad, Mufti emphasized that the suffering of border residents is not political, but deeply human. “People have fled their homes with nothing but trauma. Why must the poor always pay the price for conflict?”

In a veiled response to recent remarks by former CM Omar Abdullah on the ceasefire, she highlighted the need for patience and de-escalation, saying, “Militaries take time to step back. Don’t turn Kashmiris into a population prepared for permanent war.”

Mufti invoked the legacy of her late father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, recalling the Srinagar–Muzaffarabad bus service and cross-LoC trade, which she said once transformed the LoC from a “line of separation” into a “line of hope.” She strongly advocated for the revival of these confidence-building measures, which were suspended in 2019.

“Let the LoC be a bridge, not a battleground,” she urged. “We don’t need bunkers; we need schools, homes, and hope.”

Reaffirming her commitment to non-violence and dialogue, Mufti extended an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other national leaders to prioritize talks over conflict. Referring to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, she reiterated her stance against terrorism while also underlining the futility of constant military escalation.

“True healing in Kashmir demands dialogue, not drone strikes,” she stated. “We must choose peace — for the sake of our children, our future, and our shared humanity.”
