Jal Shakti Department Conducts Over 2.66 Lakh Water Quality Tests in J&K Villages During 2024–25
SRINAGAR, MAY 17, 2025:
In a significant achievement toward ensuring safe and clean drinking water, the Jal Shakti Department, Jammu & Kashmir, conducted over 2.66 lakh water quality tests across 6,122 villages during the financial year 2024–25.
The results confirm that the drinking water supplied across the Union Territory (UT) is largely safe for consumption, backed by a robust and transparent monitoring system.
Water Quality Network Strengthened Across J&K
The department has established a comprehensive Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance system, comprising:
-
2 Union Territory-level NABL-accredited labs
-
20 District-level NABL-accredited labs
-
76 Sub-divisional level testing facilities
This well-structured network enables routine and emergency testing, ensuring that water quality remains under strict supervision.
Contamination at Record Low
Out of the 2.66 lakh samples tested:
-
Only 78 samples (0.03%) showed signs of contamination, mostly due to turbidity, a seasonal effect caused by heavy rainfall.
-
Immediate remedial action was taken in 76 cases, resulting in a 98% corrective action rate, well above the national average of 62%.
-
J&K’s contamination rate of 0.03% is significantly lower than the national average of 4.1%, reflecting a high standard of water safety in the region.
No Contamination Cases in FY 2025–26 So Far
In the ongoing financial year 2025–26, around 25,000 samples have already been tested, with zero reported cases of contamination so far — indicating continuous improvement in water quality management.
Jal Shakti Deptt Assures Safety & Swift Action
