JKCSF Demands Immediate Halt to Ferozpora Water Loot and Environmental Damage in Tangmarg-Gulmarg.
Tangmarg, June 18:
The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), Sub-Division Tangmarg, under the leadership of its Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani, held a powerful and emotionally charged press conference addressing the alarming issues of environmental degradation, water resource exploitation, and administrative neglect in the Tangmarg-Gulmarg region. In his detailed statement, Wani condemned the unauthorized diversion of water from the Ferozpora Nalla through deep pipelines to other districts, calling it an outright theft of natural resources and a betrayal of the people whose lives, agriculture, and horticulture depend on this stream. He also highlighted the unlawful use of heavy machinery in the Nalla, in violation of Supreme Court guidelines, which is causing severe ecological damage, erosion, and destruction of aquatic life. The press conference also raised serious concerns about the illegal constructions in the ecologically sensitive Gulmarg area, unregulated tourism practices, the absence of scientific waste management, and the chemical contamination of soil and water due to artificial snow melting methods. JKCSF criticized the government for failing to complete vital infrastructure projects like the Mini Secretariat in Tangmarg and for ignoring the pathetic condition of healthcare facilities in Tangmarg, Magam, Kunzer, and Pattan, where even basic diagnostic services are unavailable. Wani also pointed out the injustice faced by over 32 villages forcibly brought under the Gulmarg Development Authority, restricting their rural livelihood. He stressed the urgent need for proper sewage treatment plants, decentralization of tourism benefits, development of an alternate road to Gulmarg, and improvement in sports infrastructure to engage and uplift the youth. Expressing solidarity with the local police’s efforts against drug abuse, he pledged JKCSF’s full support in combating this growing menace. The Forum announced its decision to organize a multi-stakeholder seminar aimed at drafting a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) to resist the continued exploitation of resources and socio-economic rights of the people. Wani appealed to all political, civil society, and religious leaders to rise above differences and unite for the greater cause of Tangmarg and Gulmarg. He concluded with a heartfelt tribute to the legendary environmental and social figures of the region, vowing to continue their legacy of courage and community service.
