SRINAGAR | JUNE 11:
Kashmir today mourns the loss of one of its most beloved musical icons, Ustad Ghulam Nabi Shah, widely celebrated as Hamle Bulbul, who passed away at his ancestral home in Dangiwacha, Rafiabad, in the Baramulla district.
With a career spanning over three decades, Bulbul played a vital role in elevating Kashmiri folk music on both national and international platforms. Known for his soulful voice, charismatic stage presence, and dedication to traditional Kashmiri art forms, he became a household name in the region and a symbol of cultural pride.
He was especially admired for his unique glass dance performances, where he would balance a glass of water on his head while performing complex dance moves—a display of unmatched discipline and artistry. Bulbul was also a master of Bacha Nagma, a vibrant and intricate folk dance performed by boys in traditional women’s attire, which has been a significant part of Kashmir’s cultural heritage.
In 2011, his contributions were formally recognized with the prestigious Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah Award for excellence in Lok Sangeet (folk music). This honor underscored his lifelong commitment to preserving the fading melodies and rhythms of his homeland.
Beyond the stage, Bulbul was known for his humility and gentle nature, earning respect and love from peers, audiences, and younger generations alike.
His passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from colleagues, fans, and cultural institutions. A condolence meeting was held under the chairmanship of Joint Director Information, Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari, with Deputy Director Ahsanul Haq Chishti, Cultural Officer Burhan Hussain, and other staff members present. The gathering remembered Bulbul’s indelible contributions to the Information Department and the broader artistic landscape.
Additionally, Muhammad Amin Bhat, President of Adbi Markaz Kamraz, also expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a major blow to the traditional arts of the region.
As the Bulbul of Kashmir falls silent, his songs, dances, and cultural legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who cherish the spirit of Kashmiri art.
