Jammu, May 6: In a major crackdown against illegal storage and distribution of banned materials, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) seized approximately 40 metric tonnes (40,000 kg) of polythene from a warehouse in the Rajiv Nagar area of Narwal late Monday evening.

The high-profile operation was led by Commissioner Devansh Yadav, who personally supervised the raid along with a team of municipal officials. During the inspection, a truck loaded with polythene was found parked outside the warehouse, while large quantities of banned polythene and gutka packets were discovered inside the premises.

Due to the scale of the seizure, police personnel and administrative officers were called in to assist the JMC team. Officials also examined registers, documents, and other equipment found on site for evidence related to the illegal stockpiling.

Speaking to the media, Commissioner Yadav said, “By appearance, the seized material seems to be single-use polythene, which is banned. However, samples will be sent to the Pollution Control Committee for laboratory analysis to verify its composition.”

He further revealed that individuals present at the warehouse fled the scene upon spotting the municipal team. An investigation is now underway to identify the owners and trace the source and intended distribution network of the consignment.

“The police will investigate who owns the warehouse and to whom this polythene was being supplied. Strict action will be taken against all those involved,” Commissioner Yadav stated firmly.

This massive seizure highlights the JMC’s strong resolve to enforce environmental laws and curb the use of banned plastic within Jammu city. Further action is expected following the lab results and ongoing police probe.
