Sajad Lone Visits Shelling-Hit Kupwara Villages, Demands Compensation and Community Bunkers

Srinagar | May 11, 2025:
Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference President and MLA Handwara, Sajad Lone, on Sunday undertook a detailed visit to several border villages in Kupwara district to assess the extent of damage caused by recent cross-border shelling.

Accompanied by party Chief Spokesperson Advocate Bashir Ahmed Dar and DDC Chairman Irfan Pandithpori, Lone toured the affected areas including Dolipora, Trehgam, Sontipora, Rawathpora, Chowkibal, and Kralpora.

Addressing the media during his visit, Lone strongly advocated for full government compensation to residents affected by shelling. “This destruction is not the result of any personal conflict. It is the fallout of a broader geopolitical crisis, and the government must take responsibility by compensating every family whose home or livelihood has been damaged,” he said.

He emphasized the economic fragility of the region and questioned why already impoverished border residents should suffer losses. “Why should the poorest citizens in these remote villages pay for damages they did not cause?” he asked.

Sajad Lone assured residents that he would raise the issue with concerned authorities and push for comprehensive rehabilitation measures. “I will speak to government officials to ensure full compensation and replacement housing for all those affected. The central leadership must come here and witness the devastation first-hand,” he asserted.

Stressing the need for long-term preparedness, Lone also called for the construction of community bunkers in all vulnerable areas to protect civilians during future hostilities. “There must be safe shelters to safeguard lives during such incidents. This is the least we owe to those living on the frontline,” he said.

He concluded by reaffirming his solidarity with the border population and expressed deep concern over their repeated exposure to danger and displacement.
