Srinagar, May 13 (RNA):
Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) President and MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone continued his outreach to border residents affected by recent shelling, visiting several frontline villages in the Uri sector, including Nowpora, Dacchi, Lagama, and Rajarwani.

Joined by senior party leaders Abdul Gani Vakil, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Chalkoo, Faisal Khan, Asif Lone, and Tassaduq Yaseen, Lone toured the affected areas to personally witness the destruction caused by cross-border hostilities.

“The people living in border villages are the real victims of conflict. We came here not just to see their suffering but to ensure that the government responds meaningfully,” said Lone while addressing reporters.

Criticism of Inadequate Relief Measures

Lone slammed the current relief mechanism as outdated and insufficient, calling for an overhaul of the compensation system for people whose homes and livelihoods are destroyed due to shelling.

“If someone’s house is reduced to rubble due to national conflict, it is unjust to ask that person to spend a single rupee from their pocket,” he asserted.

He opposed the blanket compensation formula—such as ₹2 lakh for partial damage and ₹3 lakh for total damage—arguing that losses often run into crores. He proposed a joint assessment process involving departments like construction and revenue to accurately evaluate damage on a case-by-case basis.

Proposes PMAY-Inspired Bunker Scheme

The JKPC President proposed an innovative bunker construction scheme modeled after the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), advocating for individual protective bunkers for every household in border regions.

“We spend so much on defense and infrastructure—then why can’t we ensure safety for people who live on the border, who are constantly at risk? They are the first line of defense,” he emphasized.

Assurance of Continued Support

Lone assured border residents that the JKPC will continue to stand in solidarity with them, even as they acknowledge the party’s limited resources. He lauded the efforts of party workers and local volunteers who have been supporting victims since the beginning of the crisis.

“We are not in power, but we are with the people. As a party, we’ll continue to raise our voice and do everything in our capacity until relief reaches every affected family,” he stated.

Peaceful Resolution Over War

When questioned about Indo-Pak tensions, Lone offered a measured view, stating:

“We cannot dictate terms to nations, but history has shown us that war leads only to suffering. There has never been a war that ended positively for the people,” he concluded.
