
Shantmanu Releases “Therapeutic Thoughts,” English Translation of Santosh Sangra’s Vichar Oshdi
Jammu, May 1:
In a notable celebration of literary excellence and cultural expression, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Education, Shantmanu, today released the English translation of “Therapeutic Thoughts”, an insightful rendition of the acclaimed Dogri work Vichar Oshdi, authored by Santosh Sangra. The translation has been collaboratively carried out by Professor Vandana Sharma and Dr. Shachi Sood.
The event, held under the aegis of the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), witnessed the presence of renowned writers, scholars, and academicians from across the region.
Speaking on the occasion, Shantmanu praised the translators for maintaining the essence and emotional depth of the original work. “A book deepens your roots and broadens your horizon,” he remarked. He also emphasized the importance of literary translations in academic institutions and recited a few of his own Hindi poems, earning warm applause from the audience.
JKAACL Secretary Harvinder Kaur in her welcome address described the book as “distinct and inspirational,” especially for the younger generation seeking balanced and meaningful lives.
Professor Dilip Kumar, Regional Director of IIMC Jammu, lauded the translators’ nuanced approach, stating that they “translated the book into sense, not just into sentences.”
Santosh Sangra, the original author, read select excerpts from Vichar Oshdi, focusing on themes of female empowerment and liberation. The translator, Prof. Vandana Sharma, who is also the Dean of the School of Languages at Central University of Jammu, shared her experience of “transcreating” the work to preserve its original soul while making it relatable for modern readers.
A review of the translated work was presented by Professor Gitanjali Rana, Principal of GCW Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, who emphasized its emotional and literary richness.
Other speakers included Dr. Avrinder Amar, Dr. Nancy Mengi (HoD, Social Work, CUJ), and Dr. Vandana Sharma, Senior Assistant Professor at CUJ, all of whom praised the book’s portrayal of women’s strength and the relevance of its themes in today’s world.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Javaid Rahi, Divisional Head, JKAACL Jammu.
